Best 5 (or so) Pop Albums of 2009

Top 5 (or so) Pop Albums of 2009

This list is somewhat problematic…does “pop” refer to the type of stuff that they play to death on the radio or does it really mean “popular”? And how much of the stuff on the radio is popular because they have played it to death?

Ke$ha is Kesha Rose Sebert

Ke$ha - Animal

Ke$ha has appeared out of what seems like nowhere with an electropop dance album that sounds surprisingly fresh …considering the fact it took seven years to complete.

SXSW 2009 in Austin, Texas

My Wishlist for SXSW 2009

This is my SXSW schedule for 2009. I’m not actually going to SXSW this year, but these are the bands that I would go see if I had the chance to attend. Some of my choices might give you some insight into my musical tastes...and, btw, the links will send you to reviews that I've written about each artist.

Eleni Mandell

Eleni Mandell - Artificial Fire

Eleni Mandell doesn’t like to confine herself to just one genre and she is influenced by a wide range of styles, from rock to jazz and even country. On Artificial Fire she has increased the tempo and focused more on the rock, but the other influences are still there.

Lily Allen

Lily Allen says: It’s Not Me, It’s You

Lily Allen is back after three years with her (wonderfully-titled) sophomore release, It’s Not Me, It’s You. Her dark sense of humor is intact and the overly cheesy lyrics are gone on this album…you can tell that she’s matured during her time away. And with the help of Greg Kurstin (from The Bird and the Bee) the music has grown up as well.

Erin McCarley

Best Song of January 2009

January didn’t produce very many noteworthy songs (or albums, really,) and, unfortunately, the best one (The Bird and the Bee’s “Polite Dance Song”) was actually released for the first time in 2007, effectively disqualifying it for this title.

Inara George and Greg Kurstin are The Bird and the Bee

The Bird and the Bee - Ray Guns Are Not Just the Future

Inara “Bird” George and Greg “Bee” Kurstin started working together after realizing a common love of jazz standards and, besides from being incredibly cute, the music that they create has a very retro aesthetic.

Best 3 EPs of 2008

Top 3 EPs of 2008

Some bands like to release EPs, but they don’t seem to be very popular. I’m not sure why this is because they seem to be an almost perfect length.
