Norah Jones

Best Song of November 2009

There were ten songs in the running for the month of November, but one of them almost stood out enough to invalidate the others. A list with only one song on it would be boring though.

October boasted a decent number worthy tracks …and a few that were even better than that.

Best Song of September 2009

September is apparently a great month for good music because the total number of songs this month is thirteen. They’ve been arranged in groups to fight it out like a martial arts tournament.

Florence Welch from Florence + the Machine

Best Song of July 2009

After two months of steadily increasing numbers, the songs competing for best of the month went back down for July. There are only six competing this time: “Hang You from the Heavens” from (Jack White’s new project) The Dead Weather, Magnolia Electric Co.

Best Song of May 2009

There were seven songs to choose from for the month of May and several of them were from albums that just weren’t all that great as a whole. “Number with No Name” by Ben Harper and Relentless7, “They Done Wrong / We Done Wrong” by White Rabbits and “Welcome to England” by Tori Amos all fall into this category.

Each month in 2009 seems to produce more good music than the one before it…this could be a dangerous trend. The candidates this month were narrowed down to five: Pure Reason Revolution with “ii) Apogee iii) Requiem For The Lovers,” Miss Li’s “True Love Stalker,” Julie Doiron with “Heavy Snow,” Mirah’s “The Forest” and “New Life” by O + S.

Best Song of February 2009

February boasted a few more releases to pick from than the previous month, but the showdown ended up being between five tracks: The first one is “This is Our Perfect Crime,” the quintessential track from The Von Bondies that claims, “We are the spark, we are the grit / we keep our cities loud and proud/ we keep their ears glued to the streets/ we are the underground.” Next up is “Everyone’s At
