Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It’s Blitz!

Karen O, Nick Zinner & Brian Chase of Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Their first full-length from the New York trio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Fever To Tell, contains “Maps” (the single almost universally regarded as their best song) and features an art punk style that, unlike their debut EP, doesn’t sound like it was recorded in someone’s garage. In the three years between that album and Show Your Bones they replaced the remaining garage-punk rawness with a more refined and developed sound that was superior in every way…except Karen O’s suggestive delivery was toned down. On their third studio album, It’s Blitz!, they’ve developed their sound even further, creating the first album of 2009 that doesn’t contain a single bad song.

On the 24th of February, Warren Ellis (the comic book writer responsible for, among other things, Global Frequency), using the music-based Twitter-type site, Blip.fm, wrote this: “The Yeah Yeah Yeahs finally approach the brilliance of “Maps” again on the new album.” The song in question is “Skeletons” and it is good, just not quite that good. “Heads Will Roll” and “Runaway” both surpass “Skeletons” on this album, and “Dull Life” is better than all three. (edit: “Dull Life” was on repeat in my head for several days and I made it my first blip entry.)

It’s Blitz! was originally going to be released on April 13, 2009, but the release dates were moved forward to March 9 and March 31 (for the digital version and the physical version, respectively) when the album was leaked in late February. According to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs website, the vinyl release will still be shipped on or before April 14. This is one of the best albums to date in 2009 and if you’ve ever liked the Yeah Yeah Yeahs you owe it to yourself to check out this release…even if you have to wait until the original release date to get it.
