Warpaint - Exquisite Corpse

Jenny Lee Lindberg, Emily Kokal & Theresa Wayman of Warpaint

The tubes of the intarwebz do not contain very much information about Warpaint. They are an unsigned band from California consisting of three girls and a guy that recently self-released a five song EP called Exquisite Corpse. The girls play the bass and two guitars and they all contribute to the vocals while the guy plays the drums. (Apparently, actress Shannyn Sossamon was originally the drummer, but her busy acting schedule conflicted with the band.)

They have a very dreamy sound that probably fits in the psychedelic genre and some of the elements in their music are reminiscent of other bands like Mazzy Star, The Cocteau Twins and even The Cure. There are also tempo changes, oscillating vocal effects and one song (“Billie Holiday”) even contains a bit of the 60s Motown hit, “My Guy.”

85%

Some of the songs sound a little too raw, but it doesn’t detract too much and overall this is a solid EP from a band to watch out for in the future. Adding some production value to what these guys have already created could only be a good thing.
