Top 3 Pop Albums of 2008

Pop music doesn’t really appeal to me very much, but, because I have such an obsession with female vocalists, I sometimes find myself listening to it. Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl” was the best pop song that I encountered in 2008, but her album didn’t make it to this list. You might also notice that Britney Spears didn’t make the list. (“Womanizer” was stuck in my head for a day, but that just wasn’t enough.) Here are the best three pop albums from 2008:
3. Kate Voegle – Don’t Look Away
One of the labels that people attach to Kate Voegele is “folk-pop,” but I think the undertones on her album are more related to country than folk. It wouldn’t be surprising if her record label had considered marketing her as a country artist. But...if they had I may never have stumbled upon the songs “No Good” or “One Way or Another.”
2. Demi Lovato – Don’t Forget
Demi Lovato can actually sing and Don’t Forget has more rock than the previous entry, but it also contains at least twice as much pop…this is probably the fault of Disney and the Jonas Brothers. (I only realized that the Jonas Brothers were involved with this album when I started the research for this list.) Listen to “La La Land” or “Until You’re Mine” and try to imagine what she might sound like without all of the pop.
1. Ashlee Simpson – Bittersweet World
Ashlee Simpson kinda lost her credibility after the SNL incident, but then she went and made another record. And, in addition to being better than her last album, it’s also better than the other pop stuff out there (which, admittedly, isn’t saying much). Some of the credit has to go to the extra help that she acquired for her project. Timbaland produced almost half of Bittersweet World and three of his songs (“Ragdoll,” “Bittersweet World” and “What I’ve Become”) are the best on the album.
