Top 2 “Play All the Way Through” Albums of 2008

I’d really like to have another describing term for these albums, but I couldn’t really think of a word that fit. These days it seems more rare to encounter a release that is consistent all the way through. There is almost always some track that just doesn’t work as well as the others on an album. These are the only two albums that I discovered in 2008 that fit the description…they don’t really have any exceptional tracks, but they don’t make you scramble for the fast-forward button either.
2. Girl Talk – Feed the Animals
This album is pure mash-up. There is a difference between Girl Talk mash-up and regular mash-up though…it’s the amount of different songs included in each track. The energy stays constant throughout, there are quite a few extremely unlikely pairings and you’re never really given enough time with any particular song to reach the “okay, I’m done” stage, an inherent component of regular mash-ups.
1. DJ /rupture - Uproot
Uproot is a mostly downtempo mix – including dubstep, ragga and hip-hop – that has pretty much the opposite vibe of Feed the Animals, but it’s a surprisingly cohesive selection when you consider all of the different places that it visits. The ragga parts are occasionally iffy and the Brooklyn anthem is almost too much too handle, but the rest of the mix flows nicely.
