Timecrimes (Los Cronocrímenes)

Timecrimes (Los Cronocrímenes) is a low budget Spanish film, written and directed by Nacho Vigalondo, which contains elements of sci-fi, suspense and horror. The story revolves around a normal married guy that sees a topless girl in the woods and the mystery that he encounters when he goes to investigate. Has she been attacked? Is she dead, and, if so, is there a murderer in the woods as well? This is only one facet of the plot and, while the story starts out quite basic, it loops back on itself and becomes more complex when time travel is added into the mix.
Timecrimes is easily one of the best time travel films in the past decade (right up there with Deja Vu, The Butterfly Effect, Primer and Happy Accidents, in case you were wondering) and it may be one of the most well thought-out time travel movies in existence. The story does have some issues (that are directly related to the choices of the protagonist instead of the time travel aspects), but as the events unfold you realize how closely related the unusual choices are to the time traveling… things really couldn’t transpire in a different way. And, everything considered, Timecrimes works, although not exactly the way you might want… the title is not an exaggeration.

Timecrimes is the third release in the Six-Shooter Film Series, a collection of six genre films from different countries, from the new ‘genre division’ of Magnolia Pictures, Magnet Releasing. Also, United Artists has already optioned Vigalondo‘s film and David Cronenberg is the director attached to the project, so you might want to see the original before they start filming the remake.
