Spinnerette - Spinnerette

If you know the Distillers then you’re familiar with their former frontwoman, Brody Dalle. If not, that’s okay, because her new band Spinnerette will make an even better impression. For this project she’s replaced the “whiskey and cigarettes” punk rawness with a more melodic singing style and the likelihood that this music will be heard outside of a dive bar has gone way up. Former fans might be slightly upset, but only if they refuse to learn from maxims of the past like, “the only constant is change.” The other members of the band are Tony Bevilacqua (a former Distillers bandmate), Jack Irons (the original drummer for The Red Hot Chili Peppers) and Alain Johannes (one of the guitarists from Queens of the Stone Age).
The cover art makes the allure of Spinnerette immediate and on the initial song, "Ghetto Love," Dalle’s vocals and the crunchy guitars combine to make what is easily their best track. It was previously released on the 2008 Ghetto Love EP, and in the video, Brody is even more captivating than the music. The first single is "Baptized by Fire" and it was probably chosen because it sounds nothing like The Distillers. Throughout the span of the album there are surely a few other equally valid comparisons, but Dalle sounds like Courtney Love on "All Babes Are Wolves" and "Driving Song" (two of the better tracks) and on "A Prescription for Mankind" she sounds like Siouxsie Sioux. "Cupid" and "The Walking Dead" are also worth mentioning for being good, but “Geeking" and "Impaler" deserve mention for the exact opposite reason.

The driving force behind the music of The Distillers was always Brody Dalle and it’s no different now…except her music has evolved in the five years between bands and Spinnerette is the culmination of her musical career.
