Sara Lov - Seasoned Eyes Were Beaming

Sara Lov

Sara Lov decided that she wanted to be a singer when she was six years old, but that is only one characteristic of her unusual upbringing. She was born in Hawaii and moved to L.A. with her mother when her parents divorced. Then, at the age of four, she was kidnapped by her father and taken to Israel against her will, where she lived for another ten years before being repatriated by an uncle. Eventually there was college, a ten-year stint as the lead singer for the Devics and now, her first full-length solo album, Seasoned Eyes Were Beaming.

The first half of the album has several skippable songs that are offset by “Just Beneath The Chords” and “A Thousand Bees,” but the ratio flips for the second half. The chorus of the title track sounds like it was filtered through some sort of “radio-friendly” machine – like the device in the Josie and the Pussycats movie – but it is surprisingly still quite enjoyable…as is “Animals,” a bittersweet duet with a very slight country feel. “Tell Me How” is another one of the better tracks on which Lov says, “I know that you’d never do me wrong, babe / even though, sometimes I wish you would / cuz I’m really good at getting hurt, babe / not so great at feeling good.”

Seasoned Eyes Were Beaming is not a bad debut album and Sara Lov’s brand of melancholic dream pop is definitely worth a listen. And that goes double if you’ve ever liked anything from the Devics.
