Devon Aoki in Mutant Chronicles

Mutant Chronicles is a low budget sci-fi film from the director of Dead of Night (?) and the writer of Event Horizon. The story takes place seven hundred years in the future…when the four surviving corporations battle each other for the remaining resources on the planet. One of these battles accidentally unearths a deadly mutant-creating machine that was previously buried for centuries.

In 2707, the level of technology (with a few minor exceptions) has apparently devolved to the late 1800s. (They’ve even got a coal-powered flying machine!) Actually, the tech is a little closer to the stuff from The Wild, Wild West, but that’s not the point…it’s supposed to be the future. The entire premise would have been more believable if they tried to sell it as an alternate history…and it wouldn’t have taken much effort because the war scenes even play like something from World War I. This seems to be the biggest of the film’s faults…and there are plenty, but it has a few merits as well.

Score
3/10

If you don’t take it too seriously (or seriously at all) and go in expecting a kitschy, pulp B-movie then you might not be overly disappointed by Mutant Chronicles. All in all, some of the stuff looks great, a couple of the sequences are surprisingly well done and – most importantly – this director could probably make something exciting with a decent script…wait and see what happens with his next project.
