MSTRKRFT - Fist of God

Jesse F. Keeler & Al-P of MSTRKRFT performing live

MSTRKRFT is a Canadian duo consisting of one half of the Canadian dance-punk duo, Death from Above 1979 and one half of the Canadian electronic pop duo, Girlsareshort. They are probably best known for their remix work…some of the artists that they’ve worked with are Death from Above 1979, Juliette and the Licks, Metric, Brazilian Girls, Armand Van Helden, Justice, The Crystal Method, Bloc Party and Kylie Minogue.

Fist of God is their second full studio album with all original songs and it’s in the same league as their unimpressive debut, The Looks. There were a couple decent tracks on that first release, but the rest were skippable. “Paris” was really the only good song and it has no equivalent sibling on Fist of God. “It Ain't Love,” “1000 Cigarettes” and “Heartbreaker” are the only tracks that don’t completely disappoint. They get the energy right in most cases, but the repetition and the lyrical choices of the guest artists counteract almost every worthwhile musical choice that Jesse F. Keeler and Al-P make. Since they are ultimately responsible for those choices as well they end up working against themselves.

32%

MSTRKRFT definitely have the potential to rival similar artists like Justice or Daft Punk, but they’re going to have to want it. And then they’re going to have to work for it. Right now they are just relaxing.
