Miranda Lee Richards - Light of X

Miranda Lee Richards learned to play guitar from Kirk Hammett of Metallica, but the stuff that she plays is nothing like Metallica. Her music has a dreamy quality with slight country undertones and is somewhat reminiscent of bands like The Sundays and Mazzy Star. The songs on Light of X are perfectly suited for a slow, lazy day and, while none of them will make you crank up the volume, none of them will make you reach for the fast-forward button.
Her lyrics contain the occasional verity, presumably gleaned from life itself…in the first song, “Breathless,” she says, “So hold the ones you love dear and closest to your heart/Tell them how you feel; they might not know it 'cause you never show them.” Later, in the song “Hidden Treasure,” she adds, “Why are we severe/To the ones we hold dear and closest to our hearts?/Always biting the hands that feed us.”
The country sound on a few of the melodies (“Life Boat,” “Savorin' Your Smile,” “Olive Tree”) is a bit too prominent and ends up being detrimental to the album. The musical highlight of the disc is “Early November,” a song from the EP she put out in November, the first Miranda Lee Richards release in seven years. Apparently, she must have been “waitin' for life to happen/Instead of living it each day” instead of writing music for Light of X…don’t make your fans wait so long next time, Miranda.
