MacGruber

Will Forte is MacGruber

Most people will probably be thinking things like: “They can’t possibly take the two minute MacGruber comedy sketch and turn it into a feature-length movie” and “Almost all of the Saturday Night Live movies suck.” Then there are the people who – like me – watched the trailer and thought “this might actually be a funny film.” Well, actually…the first group of people would be exactly right and the others would be so, so incredibly wrong.

MacGyver jokes have been around for decades now and, unfortunately, the entire premise for this particular one is weak (at best) and stretched way too thin. The Lonely Island’s Jorma Taccone and MacGruber himself, Will Forte, wrote the script with the help of another writer from SNL and they made sure to include language that can’t be used on television and a heaping portion of crude jokes that wouldn’t make it on the air either. Some of these work (MacGruber’s plea to get Piper to join his team,) some of them don’t (the celery in the ass trick, Dieter von Cunth’s name) and the sense of silly ridiculousness never lets up. The best running gag is when the movie’s soundtrack clashes with MacGruber’s preferred “Yacht Rock”-style musical choices. The use of music for the sex scene is also very well done (it’s the funniest moment of the film – and the only really funny bit that wasn’t spoiled in the trailer.)

Score
2/10

MacGruber is not the worst movie based on a Saturday Night Live skit though. That’s not really saying much since almost all of them suck, but this film does have a few good moments. I wouldn’t recommend it, however…there are certainly better ways to spend your movie dollar. Whip It is a better, recent film that also stars Kristen Wiig, if you need a good place to start.
