The Lonely Island - Incredibad

It’s no stretch to say that the funniest parts of Saturday Night Live lately have been the Digital Shorts. The trend started with the Chris Parnell and Andy Samberg rap, “Lazy Sunday.” (You remember the “chronic-WHAT!-cles of Narnia” song, right?) Then Natalie Portman told us what she wants (“to drink and fight!”) and what she needs (“to fuck all night!”) in “Natalie’s Rap.” Justin Timberlake got involved next with “Dick in a Box” and started a new trend. (Who hasn’t given someone this gift? …am I right?) The excellent “Jizz in My Pants” and “I’m on a Boat” are the most recent Shorts to be featured and while all of these songs are funny by themselves, the videos really add quite a lot.
The Lonely Island consists of Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer, who are all currently SNL writers. Incredibad includes all of the previously mentioned songs as well as some new stuff, but none of the new songs have the same impact as the previously released material. This could be from a lack of accompanying visuals, but it’s more likely that they used their better material first. Overall, the music production is better than average, but the lyrics are frequently too silly to have any lasting appeal. Not that comedy albums have any real replay value…it’s like watching a mystery for the second time once you know who the killer is.
I guess the real question is: Should I get this album for the musical parts of some great SNL Digital Shorts and a few new tracks? Well…I can’t comfortably recommend it. I will say this: Don’t stop making music, guys, but be sure to film videos for the songs as well.
