Jenn Grant - Echoes

Canadian folk singer-songwriter Jenn Grant

Echoes is the second album from the Canadian folk singer-songwriter Jenn Grant. This album is darker than her debut album, Orchestra For the Moon, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The songs were recorded mostly live with minimal overdubs in order to keep things as authentic as possible and the arrangements are extremely varied. Grant’s voice stands out in each track, though, whether she sings with minimal electronic atmospheres or the entire band accompanies her. The musical style bounces around and elements of doo-wop, country, swing and jazz are prominent.

The few weak moments on Echoes (“Blue Mountains,” “(I've Got) The Two Of You” and “I'll See You Again”) are easily counterbalanced by the highlights (“Heartbreaker,” “I Was Your Woman,” “Sailing By Silverships” and “Everybody Loves You”), making this one of the best albums so far in 2009. The cover of Neil Young’s “Only Love Can Break Your Heart” isn’t really on the same level as her original material, but the ironically cute sense of hopefulness is a nice touch.

It seems like new and exciting things come from the north with an increasing regularity lately…Canada keeps producing worthy artists and Jenn Grant is just the most recent example. She hasn’t quite shown up on the US radar yet, but it’s only a matter of time.
