The Faint - Fasciinatiion

the faint band image

Fasciinatiion, the newest album from The Faint, was entirely written, recorded, produced, art directed and released by them on their new label, blank.wav. These guys are making music that doesn’t sound like anything else and they’re doing everything themselves. The album starts off in the right direction with two great songs, the pop culture related “Get Seduced” and the prophetic “The Geeks Were Right”, but then it falters with “Machine in the Ghost”, the only track that I automatically fast-forward.

There seems to be a trend of two good songs followed by a third not-so-good song that continues across the album, although the subsequent lesser songs don’t require immediate skipping. “I Treat You Wrong” is another one of the better tracks, and while “Forever Growing Centipedes” isn’t quite that good, it is, um, growing on me…besides it’s difficult to go wrong with a song that talks about eating mushrooms.

Fasciinatiion feels like a half-step back after two steps forward… it’s just not as strong as Wet From Birth or Danse Macabre. This new pattern of theirs could be fractal though, so maybe the next release will be great. And I’m not recommending that people skip this album because it’s definitely worth a listen…if only for the closer “A Battle Hymn For Children”, which is one of their best songs and easily the most compelling track on this album.
