Dan Auerbach - Keep it Hid

If you are wondering if the singer/guitarist from The Black Keys held back some of his best stuff for his debut solo release, then wonder no more…he didn’t. If you have been wondering what The Black Keys would sound like with a bass player…this album might be the closest thing you will get. Surprisingly, even though the songs here have more instrumentation than his most recent release as a duo, the sound of this album is sparse by comparison.

Most of the songs on Keep it Hid are more straight-up blues than you will find on Attack and Release, but it works perfectly on tracks like “I Want Some More” and “Street Walkin'.” Those two songs are second only to “Heartbroken, in Disrepair” in terms of overall appeal. The rest of the album is either average (“Mean Monsoon” and “When I Left the Room”), slightly above average (“Whispered Words” and “The Prowl”) or just not very good (everything else). Blues fans will probably find enough to like here, but Dan Auerbach’s solo offerings are just not as accessible as his other music.
