Best Song of September 2009

September is apparently a great month for good music because the total number of songs this month is thirteen. They’ve been arranged in groups to fight it out like a martial arts tournament. “Devout” by Islands beats out Diablo Swing Orchestra’s “Stratosphere Serenade” and “Dew in the Grass” by Sea Wolf and Juliette Lewis wins the girlfight with “Noche Sin Fin,” fighting against “Trouble” by Hope Sandoval & the Warm Inventions and Paloma Faith’s “Smoke and Mirrors.” Meanwhile, The Big Pink’s “Frisk” and “Pop Art Blue” by Zero 7 both get the smackdown from Basement Jaxx with “Scars” and Magneta Lane’s “House of Mirrors” crushes Jay-Z’s “Run This Town” and “Ignorance” from Paramore. The survivors from the first round all battle each other in a massive free-for-all and “House of Mirrors” from Magneta Lane emerges as the victor, becoming the best song of September.
There were also a couple instrumental tracks that deserve mention this month: “Hanuman” by Rodrigo y Gabriela and Cougar’s “Rhinelander.” This was a difficult choice, but the “emergency rock” from Cougar beats out the slightly more traditional sound of Rodrigo y Gabriela this time.
And an honorable mention goes out to k.flay with the track “NO ignorance” from her mixtape….which actually samples another one of the songs from this month. Click here to download k.flay’s Mashed Potatoes mixtape and watch the video for “NO ignorance.”
