Best Song of May 2009

There were seven songs to choose from for the month of May and several of them were from albums that just weren’t all that great as a whole. “Number with No Name” by Ben Harper and Relentless7, “They Done Wrong / We Done Wrong” by White Rabbits and “Welcome to England” by Tori Amos all fall into this category. “Come to Bed” from Bertie Blackman, “Think of England” by IAMX, “Clean Break” from Jenny Owen Youngs and “1901” from Phoenix round out the list. Tori’s song sounds a lot (maybe too much) like her old stuff (but it’s still a refreshing change from her previous two albums) and the Phoenix song has a great retro flavor, but neither of them claims this month’s title. Harper, Blackman and White Rabbit’s entries also fell a bit short and the showdown ended up being between IAMX and Jenny Owen Youngs. In the grand scheme of my musical bias it seems that girl voices beat out darkness…or at least that’s how it played out this time. “Clean Break” by Jenny Owen Youngs is the best song for May.
