Best Song of January 2009

January didn’t produce very many noteworthy songs (or albums, really,) and, unfortunately, the best one (The Bird and the Bee’s “Polite Dance Song”) was actually released for the first time in 2007, effectively disqualifying it for this title. This left Erin McCarley’s “It’s Not That Easy,” Franz Ferdinand’s “Can’t Stop Feeling,” John Frusciante’s “Dark Light” and Animal Collective’s “My Girls.” (Just joking with the last song…you might have noticed that I don’t like Animal Collective.) The synth progression in the beginning of “Can’t Stop Feeling” works against it a bit and “Dark Light” doesn’t get going until almost four minutes into the song, so (by triple-default) that leaves only one. The best new song released in January is Erin McCarley’s “It’s Not That Easy.”
