Best Song of February 2009

Emmy the Great is still totally cute

February boasted a few more releases to pick from than the previous month, but the showdown ended up being between five tracks: The first one is “This is Our Perfect Crime,” the quintessential track from The Von Bondies that claims, “We are the spark, we are the grit / we keep our cities loud and proud/ we keep their ears glued to the streets/ we are the underground.” Next up is “Everyone’s At It,” a surprisingly mature sentiment from Lily Allen, who says, “Why can't we all / all just be honest / admit to ourselves / that everyone's on it.” Then there is the Jack Bauer-related song, “24,” from Emmy the Great and the N.A.S.A. track “Way Down,” which combines the talents of John Frusciante, RZA and Barbie Hatch. Finally, there is Zion I with “In The Mornin' (Caged Bird Pt. 2),” a song that would win hands down if basslines were the only thing being judged.

This month’s winner was more difficult to pick, but Emmy’s terribly affecting story about her television-watching (and soon to be ex-) boyfriend could not be denied. The best song of February is “24” by Emmy the Great.
