Best Song of August 2009

Nine songs floated to the top of the barrel in August, but only one song from each band is allowed to compete for best song of the month. Arctic Monkeys made things a little difficult with their new album, but the mellower “Dance Little Liar” became their contender since it actually got more plays in iTunes than “Crying Lightning.” Ingrid Michaelson’s “Soldier,” Imogen Heap’s “2-1” and Mindy Smith’s “If I Didn’t Know Any Better” are a few of the even more laid-back offerings for the month and “The Whale Song” from Modest Mouse is also somewhat easygoing…at least for the first half. To round out the list, Paul Banks from Interpol makes an appearance as Julian Plenti with “Games for Days,” Matisyahu encourages us to “Smash Lies,” Jet becomes another one of the artists to say “La Di Da” and Amanda Blank feels guilty with “Shame on Me.”
“Soldier” and “The Whale Song” eliminate most of the other tracks from the running, but then they both fall to Julian Plenti’s excellent treatise on interpersonal relations, “Games For Days.” It’s a really great track, but one of the other songs is a little bit better… “Dance Little Liar” from the Arctic Monkeys is the best song for August.
