Best Song of April 2009

Joe Lester, Brian Aubert, Nikki Monninger & Christopher Guanlao

For the month of April, there were six songs that made the list. Silversun Pickups with “It's Nice To Know You Work Alone,” “Burning Bridges” from k-os, Immaculate Machine with “Sound The Alarms,” “Pennies” from Lady Sovereign, Bat For Lashes with  “Pearl's Dream” and “Gold Guns Girls” from the band that was my favorite for a few years, Metric. Four of the songs were in a slightly lower bracket than the two that battled it out in the end: Pearl had a beautiful dream, bridges were burned, alarms were sounded and a certain lady wondered about her pennies, but, unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to make it to the finish line.

In “Gold Guns Girls,” Emily Haines says, “I don’t want to bend like the bad girls bend” and “is it ever going to be enough?” Well, I think that’s just fine, but, sorry, it probably won’t be enough. The Silversun Pickups sound like something from a previous decade, but it’s a sound that I’ve missed and “It's Nice To Know You Work Alone” is the song I’ve listened to most on this list…so it wins for the month. “It's Nice To Know You Work Alone” by the Silversun Pickups is the best song of April.
