Angels and Demons

Tom Hanks as Professor Robert Langdon and Ayelet Zurer in Angels and Demons

Ron Howard assumes the directorial duties for another story based on a Dan Brown book, Angels and Demons. This film is the sequel to the movie version of The Da Vinci Code, but the book is actually a prequel. The Da Vinci Code is one of the top 30 highest grossing movies worldwide – a surprising feat for a movie that is almost universally considered to be dull and disappointing – and even though Angels and Demons is a much better movie it seems to be doing a lot worse at the box office.

Tom Hanks is back to reprise his role as Professor Robert Langdon, but this time around there are a few elements missing. His ridiculously amazing hairstyle is gone, as is his previous costar, Audrey Tautou, and it seems like they left out the plodding pace as well. These elements were replaced with more exposition, a new costar with more chemistry, Ayelet Zurer, and a final plot twist that undermines the most important moments that preceded it.

Score
4/10

Angels and Demons is much better than its predecessor, but that doesn’t make it a good film. The story moves along quickly enough that you don’t really have time to question things like the bio-entanglement physicist that can read Latin or the indiscriminate murderer that spares the protagonists or …well, any number of other intricacies of the plot. If you sit back and enjoy the ride the film works on a purely mindless entertainment level…just try to remember not to think.
