Alessi’s Ark - Notes From the Treehouse

Alessi Laurent-Marke of Alessi’s Ark

Alessi Laurent-Marke is one of those young girls that put some of her folk songs up on MySpace and got handed a record deal. She is also a female singer-songwriter from the British Isles, and, by default, joins the ranks of artists like Laura Marling, Amy Winehouse, Emmy the Great, Adele, Lily Allen, Kate Nash, Duffy and KT Tunstall. She decided to call her musical project Alessi’s Ark and her first full-length album is Notes From the Treehouse.

Alessi’s overly affected cutesy delivery is occasionally distracting and might become grating after extended amounts of time, but for the most part, she is complemented by decent instrumentation that lessens this overall effect. A couple of songs (“Constellations” and “Memory Box”) just can’t be helped though. Luckily, there are a few good songs (“Over The Hill,” “Woman” and “Glendora”) to offset the ones that don’t work. The rest of the album is listenable, but not remarkable in any way.

Score
71%

If Alessi can tone down the musical baby talk she won’t have any problems making a career out of music… Notes From the Treehouse is a competent release for a new artist and the fact that she’s only eighteen years old only underscores her talent.
